North Kolkata Street Renamed In Honor Of Bengali Writer Shibram Chakraborty

In a poignant tribute to the renowned Bengali writer Shibram Chakraborty, Kolkata Municipal Corporation has decided to rename 'Muktaram Babu Street' to 'Shibram Chakraborty Street'. This decision, announced on the author's 121st birthday on December 13th, marks a significant recognition of Chakraborty's literary contributions.

Situated in North Kolkata, the street is home to the distinctive 'Khetra and Company,' colloquially known as 'Khetrakuthi Mesbari'. Intriguingly, nestled on the upper floor of this establishment, Shibram Chakraborty spent a substantial portion of his time. The author's connection with the house is beautifully captured in his words, "Muktarame theke Toktarame shuye shuktaram kheye ami Shibram", which means 'From Muktaram to sleeping in Toktaram, devouring Shuktaram, I am Shibram!' A sentiment he shared with every reader.

Shibram Chakraborty, a beloved figure in Kolkata, enjoyed widespread popularity as a writer. His notable works and his regular presence at the Muktaram Babu Street Mesbari have made him an integral part of the city's cultural landscape.

The initiative to rename the street was first proposed by the State Education Minister, Bratya Basu, and it gained approval from the Kolkata Mayor, Firhad Hakim. This unanimous decision by the Municipal Corporation signifies a collective acknowledgment of Chakraborty's influence on the literary and cultural heritage of Kolkata.

Simultaneously, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation is also considering renaming the 'Rajya Shishu Kishore Academy' after the esteemed author, adding another layer of recognition to Chakraborty's legacy.

While 'Khetrakuthi' is currently recognized as a heritage building by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), there are discussions to transform Shibram's Mesbari into a museum, preserving and showcasing his literary contributions. However, the community eagerly awaits the final approval of these proposals.

As the city pays homage to Shibram Chakraborty, these initiatives underscore the enduring impact of his literary legacy on the cultural tapestry of Kolkata.
