New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has recently come up with a state of the art dog pound for sterilizing stray dogs. The dog pound along with a cattle shed have been set up on three acres of land situated in Action Area ID, on the way to Aquatica. This dog pound has been set up in order to fulfill the Supreme Court’s ruling regarding sterilization of stray dogs. Senior officials of NKDA are currently overseeing the functioning of the dog pound and its arrangements. Five stray dogs have already been sterilized in the new dog pound and all of them are doing well after the operation. Stray dogs have always been hazardous throughout the country and almost 1.75 million people get bitten by these dogs annually. Out of this 1.75 million, 50,000 people die every year due to rabbis.
In order to stop this untimely loss of lives due to stray dogs, sterilization happens to be an important factor. It plays a key role in controlling the population of strays. NKDA also wishes to engage a professional agency for catching these stray dogs since most of the dog catchers are workers who do not have any proper training of this job, due to which the stray dogs are usually ill-treated and beaten up on their way to the dog pound.
