NKDA to recycle waste water at New Town

The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has decided to recycle waste water for various other usages, for which it is planning to launch a pilot project. NKDA wishes to launch this pilot project in order to reuse the waste water to cater to 25% of the daily requirement of water for other purposes excepting drinking in the next five years. A team of NKDA officials recently visited Bangalore in order to understand the water and waste management strategies better. One of the NKDA officials who visited Bangalore says, “The authorities there were making tertiary treatment of wastewater in a 300-acre area after its usual conventional treatment in the sewage treatment plants using advanced technology. This treated and recycled water is being used for irrigation purpose”. NKDA wants to have a similar infrastructure to recycle the waste water for other uses. The civic body wants to launch the pilot project near the New Town Mela ground. Another NKDA official said, “Presently, tertiary treatment of wastewater is being done on a small scale in Biswa Bangla Convention Centre with the recycled water being used for gardening, washing roads and flushing toilets. We want to expand this for the entire township”. NKDA also plans to stop the wastage of water by treating pipeline leakages seriously. “The plan is to reduce the amount of water leakage and increase recycling of wastewater. The goal is to meet at least 25% of the daily requirement from water recycled and saved from leakage in the next five years”, said an official.
