In a significant move, the West Bengal Higher Secondary Education Council is set to implement a new examination and evaluation system. It was previously announced that starting in 2026, semester-based examinations would be introduced for the 11th and 12th grades. Consequently, students would need to pass each semester to progress from the 11th to the 12th grade. However, another noteworthy change is on the horizon.
According to sources, from now on, students must pass the semester exams to advance to the next semester. In other words, passing the first semester is a prerequisite for proceeding to the subsequent semester.
But what is the minimum score required to pass? The Secretary of the Education Council clarified that currently, the passing marks for the higher secondary examination will also be considered as the benchmark for passing the semester. However, specific guidelines regarding the minimum passing score have not been provided yet. It is expected to be around 30%, but no official confirmation has been made.
Furthermore, the Secretary emphasised their commitment to modernising the curriculum to align it with scientific principles, making it more acceptable to students, educational institutions, and society. Consequently, they have meticulously crafted a framework with four pillars to ensure robustness.
On the other hand, it has been revealed that under the new regulations, a total of four semester examinations will be conducted for the 11th and 12th grades combined. Among these, the first three, including two semesters of the 11th grade and the first semester of the 12th grade, will have a duration of one and a half hours each. Whereas, the examination for the second semester of the 12th grade will be two hours long. This highlights the heightened importance placed on the final semester of the 12th grade.
The introduction of this new semester-based examination system marks a significant shift in the education landscape of West Bengal, promising a more streamlined and contemporary approach to assessment and learning.
