The Church of North India’s (CNI) synod in Delhi which is the highest decision-making body of the CNI has appointed Reverend Probal Kanto Dutta as the bishop of the Calcutta diocese for at least six months. Reverend Probal Kanto Dutta is currently the bishop of the Durgapur diocese and this appointment is an additional charge for him. The position of the bishop of the Calcutta diocese is yet to be filled up after Reverend Ashoke Biswas’s retirement. The announcement was made on Monday, August 28 primarily because Reverend Ashoke Biswas did not apply for renewal of his term this year and according to the rules, once a bishop turns 65, the extension can only be granted if he applies for renewal of a fresh term. Reverend Das had earlier retired in August 2016 and was on an extension since then.
