The West Bengal Government has recently come up with new sets of rules to regulate street vending and the activities of the hawkers. According to the new rules, hawkers are prohibited to run a business on open roads and it's mandatory for them to keep two-thirds of every pavement available for the pedestrians, to be able to set up shops. The Government has appointed the municipal bodies to form vending committees for identification and issuing of a license to hawkers under the ‘Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending Rules 2018’. A survey will be done by these committees to limit their population and to pinpoint their locations. The committee would segregate places into vending and no vending zones, which would be strictly followed to avoid busy places to get overcrowded. The new rules would restrict the hawkers from using inflammable articles like tarpaulin and unlawfully blocking the entrances or exits of shops, houses, hospitals, and offices.
