The State Transport Department launched two new AC trams recently which will ferry passengers of Kolkata for the first-time during summer. Both of these AC trams were built at the Nonapukur tram depot near Ripon Street and costed Rs 25 Lakhs each. Each of these AC trams comes fitted with a 5.5 tonne AC unit, LED bulbs, fans, curtains and pneumatic doors which are to be operated from the motorman’s cabin. The system of communication between the driver and the conductor via a bell is installed too. Transport Minister Suvendu Adhikari said,
We want to dispel the myth that the state government is trying to wind up trams. That is not the case. Heavy sentiment is associated with trams in Calcutta. Trams should not affect the overall speed of vehicles on roads. But that is not to say we are trying to do away with trams.
The routes of these two new AC trams will be decided soon. The transport department earlier had two AC trams ‘Charoibeti’ and ‘Rupashi Bangla’ but those are used for joyrides. The response of these two AC trams prompted the transport department to build two new for ferrying passengers during the summer. However, the fare structure of these two trams are not yet set but it’s certainly going to be a bit higher.
