“We see it as a breach of trust. Even the invitation and newspaper ads mentioned that the awards would be given away by the President and now, this is far from acceptable. In so many years, such a thing has never happened and we feel humiliated. Also, everyone waits for this award and for us it’s not just a matter of pride to accept the award from the President, but also an opportunity of a lifetime,” said Atanu Ghosh, director of the Bengali movie ‘Mayurakshi’.
Director Kaushik Ganguly, who was another recipient of National Award this time, thinks that if in case President fails to be present there on the D Day, it becomes the duty of the Vice President to present the awards. However, when the cabinet minister is doing the job, it becomes a political issue; whereas National Awards are apolitical.
National Awards are in fact the recognition of good work and as the recipients have been told that a separate photo shoot will be arranged for them, which they found to be derogatory. People from remote areas have come along with their kith and kin with many expectations. Therefore, the awards controversy on the eve of 65th National Film Awards has in reality cast a shadow on the entire ceremony. Riddi Sen, the 19-year-old National Award recipient was kept out of the protests as he received the Award from the President only. However, he has also put forward his views that he is genuinely not supporting the act.
