A shy and reserved man, Mrinal Sen is a stalwart in the filmmaking industry, all over India and mostly in the Bengali community. Although diffident, he brought about a dynamism in the Bengali cinema with his notable works like ‘Bhuvan Shome’(1969), ‘Mrigayaa’ (1976), ‘Akash Kusum’ (1965). Often considered to be one of the greatest ambassadors of Bengali films along with his contemporaries Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak, he was widely known for his work ethic and dedication and his strive for perfection. He was known to bring about a shift in the typical portrayal of Bengali ‘bhodrolok’. His films covered a wide range of genres from existentialism, Marxism to Nouvelle Vague and Italian neorealism. His accolades involved awards from all the major film festivals- Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Moscow, and the list goes on. He is indeed a revolutionary figure in the history of Indian Films.
And with his demise, we have completely lost the sacred trinity of Ray, Sen and Ghatak in our cinema.
