More e-buses for Kolkata

Encouraged by positive response from passengers, the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) has decided to procure more electric buses in the near future. The Hidco has been operating and maintaining electric buses in New Town. Introduced in May 2018, these e-buses have been used by more than a lakh commuters till February 13, 2019, averaging 330 passengers per day.

These 32-seater AC buses re run in two shifts on three routes daily. The length of the main route is around 16 km and the buses take about 40 minutes to cover it. 10 charging stations have been set up in New Town. Feedback from passengers has been positive and they feel that not only are the buses comfortable, but they have also solved transportation woes. They would welcome more such pollution-free buses.

The buses have a seamless system. Passengers can board the buses through the door at the front end and get off only through the rear door. The driver hands over printed tickets to the passengers and operates the doors with an automatic lever. Standing inside the buses is not allowed. Each electric bus also has a fire extinguisher, emergency gates, an emergency stop button, and a CCTV camera. This ensures safety of passengers.

More such buses will enhance the air quality index as well as resolve transportation problems across Kolkata.
