Mithali Raj, the Captain of Indian women’s test team said on Tuesday, “An IPL event for women will make sense only when the BCCI has a place for Strong domestic and backup setup”. According to the 35-year old, India A (Team) needs strong and quality players in the core team. Once Indian women’s cricket selects those players then it will be easy to have an IPL.
India’s 0-3 whitewash at the hands of the Australian Women’s cricket team in the ICC women’s champion series was disappointing after the Indian Women’s cricket team’s performance in the World Cup.
Keeping the fact in mind, Mithali said, the team needs to have strong domestic players and also needs to keep backup players too. This strategy will make the team play efficiently and win tournaments in the long run. Right now, if one key player in the team of 15 - 17 players gets injured or performs poorly, then at present there are very little options left for replacement that can actually match-up with the team. The BCCI decided to organise exhibition matches, which can lay the groundwork for women’ IPL.
Mithali stated in an interview, "You can feed in any domestic (players) but then there will be a stark difference between an international player and domestic player. It might go against promoting women's cricket."
Veteran Pacer Jhulan Goswami, agreed with her Test Captain. "That is absolutely right, the domestic set up needs to be a little stronger,"said Jhulan.
Meanwhile, India will be a part of the T20 tri-series which also involves England and Australia, and will begin on Thursday in Mumbai. The captain even said, before the World T2O, the Indian women’s team needs to get its combination right.
