The iconic MiG-27 fighter jet of the Indian Air Force is finally going to be decommissioned after four decades of its service. The MiG 27s had played a very crucial role during the Kargil conflict with Pakistan 20 years ago and happens to be a pride of the Indian Air Force. Nicknamed ‘Bahadur’, the MiG 27 was well known because of its survivability. The current version of the MiG 27s in use happens to be an upgraded version inducted in 2006. All the other variants of MiG such as the MiG-23 BN, MiG-23 MF and the stock MiG 27 have already been decommissioned from Indian Air Force. The Ministry of Defence in a statement said, "These aircraft have made immense contribution to the nation, both during peace and war. The fleet earned its glory in the historic Kargil conflict when it delivered rockets & bombs with accuracy on enemy positions. The fleet also took active part in Op-Parakram". Indian Air Force currently has only one unit ‘Number 29 Squadron’ that operates the MiG 27 Upgrades. This Squadron was raised on 10 March 1958 at Air Force Station Halwara. Ministry of Defence added, "The Squadron is now slated to be number plated on 31 Mar 2020 with 27 December 2019 being its last flying day thereby making the swing wing fleet a part of IAF's glorious past". A de-induction ceremony is being held today on Friday, 27th December at Air Force Station Jodhpur where the MiG 27 will showcase its capabilities for the last time before retiring. Air Marshal SK Ghotia VSM, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief South Western Air Command along with veteran air warriors and serving air warriors will preside over the ceremony.
