Midnapur’s Dying History

The first destination that comes to most of the locals’ mind while planning a weekend trip is Digha or Mandarmoni. There will be very few people who haven’t been there. But if you ever want a change and want to explore a different place then Kurumbera Fort is the place. Located in the district of East Midnapur in the state of West Bengal. It is 6km away from the Keshiari Village.

The Kurumbera Fort dates back to the A.D 1438-1469 established during the era of Surya Vamsi King of Odisha Gajapati Kapilendra Dev. The inscriptions on the fort are in Oriya but the locals say that the language is not decipherable. The structures were built during the rule of Aurangzeb.

The fort is surrounded by walls on all sides. Inside the premise, there are three domed structures with a sacrificial altar. There are several quarters outside the dome and the roof of the structure is in the shape of the flower and the rooftops are decorated with engraved flowers. The Archaeological Survey of India used a series of cement and lime mortar for holding the external pillars.

Apart from this, there is no additional information available of this fort. The place is ideal for a short family trip. East Midnapur is a rich tourist hub among the locals with places like Mahishadal Rajbari, Muktidham Temple, Raikota Fort of Garbeta, major seaport of Haldia and Pathra are few of the off-beat places to add a different taste to your travel thirsty palette. And if you crave for the seashore then East Midnapur has arrangements for that also, as Digha, Shankarpur, Tajpur, Mandarmoni and Junput are there for you.
