Microbial Similarities: Yale University researchers have discovered microbial similarities among different individuals

Researchers at Yale University have revealed microbial similarities between different people. According to them, the microbes present in the bodies of close friends exhibit significant resemblances.

Yale University recently conducted a study on social connections, analyzing the social interactions and microbiomes of 1,787 adults from 18 remote villages in Honduras. The study identified 2,543 microbial species, with 339,137 variants among them. Further examination of these microbes led scientists to discover striking similarities in the microbiomes, or gut bacteria, of individuals with close relationships.

Scientists attribute these similarities to the transfer of microbes between individuals due to close social interactions. This phenomenon depends on how much time two people spend together. Activities like sharing spaces, touching the same surfaces, handshakes, or physical contact such as hugging facilitate the exchange of microbes between individuals.
