What began as a pastime has grown into something much bigger! Meet Manoj Khan and Abhishek Biswas- the two of them added tune and tempo to lines and voila! They are rapping. They are young, cool and they love music. For them, rapping is similar to breathing.
From 9 am to 5 pm, Minaj Khan (20) works in a factory warehouse in Garden Reach. After the last bell, he returns to Babu Bazar in Kidderpore, settles down and writes poetry. It’s not just Minaj and his friend Abhishek a.k.a DJ Christiano, who find solace in rapping. Groups of youngsters from Alimuddin Street to Howrah’s Pilkhana are putting the angst and the struggle of their daily lives into power lines that perfectly suit the medium of rap. Aged between 17 and 23, these boys pen down their emotions and jazz it up with peppy music. They take help of their friends and make cool videos to be posted on YouTube.
Their recent video titled ‘Kidderpore basti’ that talks about life in the by lanes of Kidderpore, where the two of them have grown up, have garnered nearly four lakh views on YouTube. Their songs capture the dreams and dreariness of their mohallas like nothing else. Minaj confessed, “My parents did not approve of my music. Now after a bit of recognition, they have started accepting it. My advice to the younger musicians would be, ‘Follow your dreams and convince your family by success.”
