The name of this train is the Mauritania Express. The longest train in the world travels through the Sahara Desert. The Express is 2.5 kilometers in length and it has 200 carriages.
In 1963, the train started. The train was launched because of transporting iron ore from the iron mines of Nouadhibou, Mauritania's second port city. However, the train was shut down due to mechanical issues in 2009. But now it is restarted.
But this train is not suitable for passenger travel. Because Mauritania Express is an iron ore freight train, this express runs through the almost uninhabited regions of the Sahara Desert and transports around 16,000 tons of iron ore. Each of the 200 carriages carries at least 84 tons of iron. The train travels from Zouerate in Mauritania to the port city of Nouadhibou, covering a distance of approximately 706 kilometers. The long journey takes about 20 hours to complete. Locals in the Sahara sometimes use this train to travel from one place to another.
Since 2019, Mauritania Railway has allowed travelers to ride this train. It is reported that two carriages have been added for tourists, who will also have the opportunity to visit an iron mine.
