Late Thursday night, a devastating fire broke out in a multi-story building in the heart of Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. The blaze erupted around 10 p.m. on Bailey Road, consuming a seven-story structure.
Preliminary reports indicate that at least 43 individuals lost their lives in the tragic incident, with fears that the death toll may rise further. Many others sustained injuries, receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and the Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute.
The fire, aided by gas cylinder explosions, quickly spread from the ground floor to the upper levels of the building, posing a grave threat to those trapped inside. Despite the efforts of 13 firefighting units, it took nearly two hours to bring the blaze under control.
The building housed various commercial establishments, including restaurants and shops, making it densely populated during the time of the fire. Eyewitnesses recounted harrowing tales of people jumping from upper floors in a bid to escape the inferno.
Mohammad Mainuddin, an official from the Fire Service Department, revealed that rescue teams managed to evacuate approximately 75 individuals from the building, with 40 of them hospitalised for treatment. Recovery operations are set to resume Friday morning.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, with initial suspicions pointing towards a gas cylinder explosion in one of the restaurants. Concerns have been raised about safety standards, as gas cylinders were reportedly stored on multiple floors of the building, exacerbating the intensity of the fire.
Health Minister Samanta Lal Sen, after visiting the medical facilities treating the victims, confirmed the tragic loss of life and assured ongoing medical support for the injured.
The incident serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for enhanced fire safety measures and stricter enforcement of building regulations to prevent such disasters in the future.
