Condoling the demise of former Union Minister George Fernandes, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee mentioned he was a true leader and a much-admired role model. George Fernandes was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. And according to the family sources, he recently contracted swine flu. On Tuesday morning the former defense minister passed away at the age of 88 in Delhi. From 1998 to 2004, Fernandes held the defense ministry portfolio, under Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government. He also held the portfolios of communications, industry, and railways under various governments. Fernandes oversaw the Pokhran nuclear tests of 1998 and the Kargil war in 1999, as a defense minister. He frequently used to visit the soldiers deployed at Siachen glacier to look after their well-being and provided them with various facilities. The nation lost not only an eminent politician but a visionary too.
