Love in the Street

Let us take you to a street of Kolkata that has a very romantic name but has nothing to do with romance. We guess you have understood about which street we are talking if not then, we are talking about the ‘Lovelock Street’. The name is very enticing but it has nothing to do with romantic or sensuous love. Lovelock or Arthur Samuel Lovelock was a renowned businessman of British Kolkata. He was one of the partners of the Lovelock & Lewis. Lovelock lived in Ballygunge and his house still stands near the entrance of Lovelock Place. He was so loved by the people that after his death on 18^th November 1903, people mourned over his death and to pay tribute to him they named a street near Ballygunge after his name. Lovelock Street is also known as Lovelock Place. The company Lovelock was associated with, Lovelock & Lewis was located on the upper floor of 25, Mangoe Lane; which later shifted to 4, Lyons Range behind the Writer’s Building. Like this street almost every street of Kolkata has a rich history, it may be its name or any incident that took place there which earned it the name.
