The Kolkata Police has decided to install 40 more speed cameras around the city in order to gain control over speeding by drivers. Kolkata Police has also decided to install 100 more Red Light Violation Detector (RLVD) cameras. Currently 21 speed cameras are installed across the city by the Kolkata Police which has successfully reduced the number of speed violations in those areas. Installation of these cameras is carried out under the Safe Drive Save Life campaign. The spots where 40 more speed cameras will be installed are marked and installation work will begin soon. Speed cameras are devices which track over speeding vehicles and take snapshots of registration plates of those vehicles. The data then gets uploaded to the central traffic database and citation cases are sent to vehicle owners via SMS. RLVD cameras along with speed cameras are installed at important junctions of the city due to which traffic violations have significantly come down. Pandey Santosh, Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) of Kolkata Police said,
We are bound to ensure safe journey for the people and thus we are taking necessary steps to curb road accidents. Our appeal to the citizens is to please follow the road norms for both drivers and pedestrians to stay safe.
