Kolkata will witness the chilliest Christmas in the past five years, courtesy an uninterrupted flow of the cold and dry Northwesterly wind. The mercury is expected to hit a low of 12 degree Celsius on the occasion of Christmas Eve. A forecast of a long chill spell was made by the Met office. The impact of cyclone Phethai was significant after the rain triggered by the depression resulted in lowering of the mercury level. The temperature plunged by two degrees instantly the following day from 16.1. The minimum temperature recorded on Christmas was around 20.3 degrees in 2014, 18.1 degrees in 2015, 17.1 degrees in 2016 and 14.7 degrees the previous year. As the city is busy preparing for the festive occasion of Christmas and New Year, the people are likely to embrace the cold weather and make the most of it.
