Kolkata may receive showers during Diwali

The Regional Meteorological Centre at Alipore has predicted that the city of Kolkata will be receiving light showers for the next few days. According to the Met department, a low-pressure trough that is currently extending from Andhra Pradesh to Chhattisgarh may trigger rain for the next few days. G K Das, director of Regional Meteorological Centre at Alipore said, “A low-pressure trough has formed over the Bay of Bengal. It is moving towards Bengal from south-central India. Under its impact, south Bengal and Kolkata are likely to be lashed by light to moderate rain in the run-up to Kali Puja and Diwali”. The weather department in a report said, “A low-pressure area over west central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal is moving towards Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The system is sucking in a lot of moisture from the sea and is tipped to trigger rain and thundershowers in several districts of Bengal”. Sanjib Bandyopadhyay, deputy director-general, India Meteorological Department, Kolkata said, “The moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal is preventing the dry winds from north India from entering the state. A low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea is proving to be another stumbling block for the winds, which herald the onset of winter in Calcutta”. The rain may intensity in the next few days and if the trough persists, it may drizzle during the Kali Puja.
