The city of Kolkata gets its new commissioner Anuj Sharma replacing Rajeev Kumar who was transferred and posted as ADG of Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Anuj Sharma is a 1991 batch IPS Officer from Uttar Pradesh and has a fair share of experience of serving in Calcutta Police. Sharma had previously served as Deputy Commissioner of the eastern suburban division, south division and different headquarters. He has also handled some otherimportant postings including the Superintendent of Police in South Dinajpur and East Midnapore, Deputy Inspector-General of the CID (headquarters), Inspector-General (north Bengal),Inspector-General (law and order) and Additional Director-General (CID). Sharma was a student of La Martiniere College, Lucknow and is a graduate in Economics from Lucknow University. He also happens to be a gym freak and has a particular taste in old melodies. Just after being posted as the CP of Kolkata, he mentioned that Kolkata Police will focus mainly on the core areas of policing and especially the safety and security of the women. He said, “Calcutta police has very strong tradition of public service. Our focus will remain serving the people. Core areas of policing like anti-crime, traffic, community policing, and especially protection of ladies. Although Calcutta police had been doing this (all along), there may be a need to do some fine-tuning”.
