The Kolkata Municipal Development Authority (KMDA) has recently filed a proposal for a new flyover to be constructed at Sonarpur, the southern part of the city. According to KMDA, the new flyover, if constructed will bring down the congestion of the Sonarpur market area and also the traveling time to EM Bypass and Basanti Highway. RITES, an engineering consultancy company, specializing in the field of transport infrastructure have submitted an inception report to KMDA already mentioning the details of the 1km long two-lane flyover from Sonarpur Chakberia to Sonarpur Bantala Road. RITES will also be submitting a detailed project report to KMDA shortly. The Sonarpur market area remains heavily congested due to the vehicular movements to both directions from Sonarpur Chakberia Road and Sonarpur Bantala Road and this flyover will make things easy for the motorists. A KMDA official said, “The proposed flyover will reduce traffic congestion in the market area to a large extent, as vehicles from Chakberia Road that now travel to Basanti Highway via Bantala Road will take the flyover to reach Bantala Road in a few minutes. They won’t have to move past the congested market area that takes a considerable amount of time”. As many new commercial, educational and health institutions are being set up in this area, the flyover will contribute to further development of the area.
