The water leakage issue of the pipeline supplying water to the Tallah tank has caused major trouble for the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). The leakage has taken place in one of the major pipes that carry filtered water from the Palta water treatment plant to the Tallah reservoir and pumping station. A group of engineers of KMC had earlier noticed that water was flowing out of the underground pipes and they were sure of a crack inside one of the underground pipelines near the Tallah Bridge. Soon after, the civic body deployed workers to dig into the ground for spotting out the crack near the bridge. The area was cordoned off and traffic was diverted in order to carry out the digging operation for locating the crack. However, the KMC workers and engineers were not able to locate the spot from where the leakage was taking place in spite of digging for hours and their efforts were fruitless. A senior KMC official said, “Our workers have tried their best to locate the pipe that has developed a crack. They faced several obstacles underground but managed to dig up to 5 meters. We need to go down 2 meters further to locate the pipe. But we need to take a pause”. The KMC engineers are currently worried about the four major water pipes along with other underground utilities like sewage pipes. A KMC Engineer said, “This apart, we need to save Tallah bridge. Going down 2 meters without taking precautionary measures could harm to the foundation of the bridge. Besides, there are underground sewerage lines that we cannot cause harm to”. The civic officials are worried that if the leakage is not located and repaired soon the supply of filtered water might fall short. Keeping in mind the issue of high temperatures now, a shortage of purified water certainly is going be a very serious issue. But KMC is working on the solution and hope it will be solved soon.
