The Great Banyan Tree of the Indian Botanic Garden is around 300-year-old and is the widest tree in the world. Recently, there have been back to back nor-westers in the state that can damage the great tree. It has to be mentioned that the banyan tree was severely damaged by two cyclones in the nineteenth century; that destroyed the main trunk of the tree. This time the authorities are taking complete precaution. 67 weak spots have been identified on the tree. The injured parts get affected by fungal infections that need distinct care. The joint director of the garden Pratibha Gupta said that they have a team of eight botanists and five keepers to look after the tree. they check the tree after every nor-wester no matter how late at night. To check fungal infection and termite attack, anti-fungal, ant-termite medicines have been applied, along with Blitox mixed with linseed oil. Extra support has been provided to the tree in the form of bamboo and eucalyptus poles of heights 15-20ft. These poles will support the weak branches and they can rest on them.
