The Centre for Disaster Preparedness and Management of Jadavpur University has decided to conduct studies on volcano triggered tsunamis and to take up awareness measures for such a natural disaster. This move comes after 350 people lost their lives in a tsunami in December 2018 caused due to an earthquake in Indonesia which happens to be a volcanic active country. Gupinath Bhandari, Civil Engineering Department of JU and the in-charge of the Centre for Disaster Preparedness and Management college wing said, "We have no knowledge about the quantum of a volcanic eruption, which can bring about a tsunami. We will collect information in this regard through the internet or by coordinating with the national and international universities with whom we have collaborations. This will enable us to make our students and the common people more aware and prepare in the face of such a disaster". He also said, “We have been conducting projects and awareness campaigns and even done some in coordination with Bangladesh. We want to do the same regarding the possibility of a tsunami occurrence after a volcanic eruption. For this, we have to gain knowledge on whether there is any quantum calculation of an eruption that can bring a tsunami as aftermath”.
