Jadavpur University has decided to conduct another round of counseling on 13th and 14th August for 200 vacant engineering seats which were left vacant even after three rounds of online counseling by the joint entrance examination board. The university currently has 1,243 engineering seats spread into 16 courses. Chiranjib Bhattacharjee, one of the two pro-vice-chancellors, said, “The vacant seat count will cross 200 after the ongoing admission season ends on August 6. Details of the counseling schedule will be announced soon on the university’s website - www.jadunivedu.in”. The university officials assume that one of the reasons behind this huge number of vacant seats is the new IITs, like the one set up in Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, and the NITs. This year the university had reserved 533 of its 594 BTech seats in the general category for domicile students residing in West Bengal, still a large number of students did not turn up in the three rounds of centralized counseling. One of the officials of the university said, “We were under the impression that with the domicile policy in force, all the students who were selected through centralized counselling would take admission. But that did not happen. This shows the domicile clause cannot help us retain the best students. Students with lower ranks on the JEE merit list will be selected through decentralized counselling”.
