Recently, the Indian Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for the redevelopment of 508 railway stations across India as a part of the Amrit Bharat Stations Scheme, spreading across 27 states and union territories.
The extensive redevelopment project, estimated to cost more than RS 24,470 crore, aims to transform railway stations into modern, well-equipped hubs.
The redevelopment will provide modern passenger amenities along with well-designed traffic circulation, inter-modal integration, and signage for the guidance of passengers.
The scheme was launched In February 2023 by the Ministry of Railways.
The station buildings’ designs will be inspired by local culture, heritage, and architecture. 91 stations on the North East Frontier Railway have been identified for redevelopment under this scheme. The General Manager also mentioned the launch of multiple mail, express, and passenger trains, including the first Bande Bharat Express in Assam connecting Guwahati to New Jalpaiguri.
15 level crossing gates have been removed, and 33 road under bridges and 8 road over bridges have been constructed in the last seven months to improve safety. 207 km of rail renewal and 86 km of sleeper renewal have been completed within the mentioned period.
An Intrusion detection system has been introduced on the 114-kilometer Elephant Corridor under the North East Frontier Railway to prevent train-elephant collisions. 19 new lines, 6 doublings, and 3 railway electrification projects Once these projects are completed, 1309.38 km of new railway lines, 781.77 km of double lines, and 913 km of electrified routes will be added to the Indian Railways map. The work on the international connection project with Bangladesh and Nepal is going ahead. A PET survey of two routes to connect Bhutan has been completed.
