In a momentous achievement at the Asian Games, Indian women shooters clinched gold and silver in two events, marking a significant departure from the norm. While Indian male athletes have traditionally shone in shooting, this time, it was the women who took centre stage.
On the fourth day of the Asian Games, the women’s 25-metre pistol team event witnessed India’s dominance as they secured the gold with a total score of 1759 points. The triumphant team consisted of Manu Bhaker, Esha Singh, and Rhythm Sangwan. The competition, held in China’s Hangzhou, featured various shooting disciplines, with two distinct categories: rapid and precision.
Manu Bhaker’s exceptional performance ensured India’s gold in the Rapid category. Across three intense rounds, the Indian team consistently scored 295, 295, and 293 points, securing their victory with grace and precision. The competition was fierce, with nail-biting moments, but India emerged triumphant.
In the precision category, India once again showcased their prowess with a total score of 292, 290, and 294 points across three rounds. The collective efforts of the Indian women shooters earned them a silver medal in this category. The Chinese team emerged as the gold medalists with a total score of 1756 points.
Meanwhile, in the women’s 50-metre rifle 3-position event, India continued to shine. Sift Kaur Samra, Ashi Chouksey, Manini Kaushik collectively amassed 1764 points, securing the second-place podium. China claimed gold with 1773 points, while South Korea settled for bronze with 1756 points.
The women’s shooting team, with their remarkable performance, bagged a total of 16 medals for India. This historic achievement added to India’s growing list of successes in various sports, including women’s cricket, men’s 10-metre air rifle, and equestrian events.
This victory not only showcases the extraordinary talent of Indian women in the field of shooting but also symbolises a broader shift in gender dynamics in sports.
