Hindu hostel is finally reopening for students. A team from the education department visited and certified occupancy, gas connection and fire resistance facility of the hostel on Monday.
It was reported that the convocation of presidency was held at Nandan and not in the University premises due to the agitation of the students protesting against the delay in handing over the hostel, State Education minister Partha Chatterjee had declared in the Assembly that steps were taken to open the hostel.
Hindu hostel plays a significant role in Bengal's history. President Rajendra Prasad, Meghnad Saha, Sukhamoy Chakraborty, Rathin Sengupta are the famous alumni of the hostel. It was constructed in 1886 and was meant for the students who came to the presidency university from the districts.
Vice-chancellor of Presidency University, Professor Anuradha Lohia, applauded all agencies engaged in the renovation of the hostel which includes six blocks. The hostel now has been open for Muslim students as well.
