Hemant Karkare, a name that dwells in every heart after 2008 Mumbai massacre. The Chief of Anti-Terrorist squad was born on 12 December 1954. The legendary figure, is survived by two daughters, Jui Navare and Sayalee and son Aakash. Before joining as Chief of ATS in Maharashtra in January 2008, joined as Joint Commissioner of Police(Administration) in Mumbai Police. In his basket, he has the achievement of leading the ATS as Chief in Malegaon bomb blast. On the night of Mumbai attack, when Hemant Karkare came to know about terrorist attack in Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus and led his team to fight for his country. While encountering the terrorists, a volley of bullets was fired towards them, martyring all but one, Assistant Police Inspector Jadhav.Shot three times in chest, Hemant Karkare died at that moment, the place was just minutes away from the Mumbai Crime Branch Office.
The martyr was honoured with the Ashoka Chakra on 26 January 2009 for his bravery.
