Groove With Purulia’s Jhumur

The westernmost district of the state of West Bengal has its own different set of culture and heritage. It is a part of the Chotanagpur plateau. The district has gained a current interest for weekend trips among locals. Purulia is known for its red soil, Palash flowers, temples, and buildings. Chhau dance is a very popular folk dance of this district which has now gained recognition across the world also.

Purulia’s Jhumur is another traditional folk song that is very popular among the several communities of the district including kurmi, Kumhaar, Ghatoal, Muchi, and tribals like Santhal, Oraon, Kharia, Birharh, and other tribes. Music connects people all around the world and so has happened in case of Jhumur as well. These songs are equally popular across the border in Bangladesh also.

The songs are about the earthly love of Radha Krishna accompanied by dialogues with a big dramatic effect. Even Kaviguru Rabindranath Tagore and rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam composed many songs according to the tone and form of Jhumur songs.

The jhumur songs can be distinguished by their two notable character traits; namely, firstly the songs go up to crescendo and then it comes down to diminuendo and secondly in these songs a balance between the crescendo and the base note remains unchanged. The jhumur songs are generally associated with dance and there are different kinds of jhumur songs including narrative jhumur, party jhumur, khemta jhumur performed with the khemta dance, chhau jhumur along with chhau dance. Then there are special jhumur songs accompanied with month such as the Bhaduria jhumur song performed in the month of Bhadra. Chhau has built its place in our country but jhumur also needs to be propagated among the people so that this traditional folk also gains popularity.
