Green Corridor saves another life after successful heart transplant in Kolkata

Anusha Adhikari, a 44-year-old resident of Dum Dum Cantonment in Kolkata was given another chance at life through a heart transplant all thanks to the Green Corridor in Kolkata, a collective initiative by Regional Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organizations (ROTTO) and Kolkata Police.

A Green Corridor is a special route that is taken to transport harvested organs to the recipient in the shortest possible time. The traffic signals are manually operated so that the carrier does not hit any red lights and avoids peak traffic.

All thanks to the green corridor, the heart reached Fortis Hospital, Anandapur from the Airport in a record time of 16 minutes, covering over 18 kilometers.

The heart belonged to a 16-year-old Mumbai boy who was declared brain dead at Global Hospital after an accident on the 23rd of May. With the permission from the deceased’s family the heart was retrieved at 6:05 pm and a green corridor was created from Global Hospital to Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport where the flight took off at 8:05 pm. Once the flight landed at 10:17 pm it was immediately transported to the hospital via the green corridor in flat 16 minutes. The entire procedure was completed by 3 am.

The recipient, Anusha Adhikari suffered from dilated cardiomyopathy which is a condition in which the pumping chamber of the heart- the ventricles, especially the left ventricle is enlarged and weakened. Some people go on to live normal lives with this condition but in some cases the condition proves to be life threatening.

Anusha Adhikari’s health was deteriorating at an accelerated rate and the only way to save her was through a transplant. The Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization hence put her at a priority on their transplant list due to this. The doctors released a statement that the patient will be kept under supervised watch for 24-48 hours but is in a stable condition.
