Satyajit Ray’s Goopi Bagha franchise has been imprinted in our memories. We still get as excited when we watch those movies namely, ‘Goopi Gyne Bagha Byne’, ‘Hirak Rajar Deshe’, and ‘Goopi Bagha Phire Elo’. Good news for all the iconic duo is returning on silver screen after 50-years in a very different way. The film ‘Goopi Gyne Bagha Byne’ will be released as an animated film titled as ‘Goopi Gawaiyaa Bagha Bajaiyaa’. It is made by the famous animator-filmmaker Shilpa Ranade. The characters were actually created by Ray’s grandfather, Upendrakishore Raychowdhury and brought into life on screen by Satyajit Ray.
‘Goopi Gyne Bagha Byne’ was released in May 1969 and this year is the golden jubilee year of their first appearance and there is no better way of remembering them than this. Ranade completed the film in 2014 only, after that it was shown at many film festivals both national and international; it won AASIFA Award for best animated feature film and the jury award at ICFF, Hyderabad.
In the original story Goopi and Bagha receive three boons from the King of Ghosts but in this new animated version they will receive one extra boon, naturally, there was no update on why such an addition has been made? To get an answer to this one has to watch the movie which releases on 1st March.
