The state government will start renovating the Gandhi Bhavan at Beliaghata and set up a mega gate at its entrance to commemorate Gandhiji’s 150th birth anniversary. The tendering process for this renovation work has already begun and the entire project is expected to be completed by May 2019.
Gandhiji had stayed at this house for 25 days when he was in Kolkata during the August 1947 riots. The house was then known as Hyderi Manjil. The state government now plans to turn this into a major tourist spot. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had visited the Gandhi Bhavan in 2018 and planned the renovation in order to highlight the importance of this house to future generations and students. The Gandhi Bhavan also houses a museum with exhibits like a spinning wheel, and some personal belongings of Gandhiji. His pocket watch, slippers, and some photographs are also on display.
Some cracks are developing on the walls for which proper maintenance is needed. PWD officials estimate the cost of renovation to be around 50 lacs. Repairs of the roof and the building will be the main focus of the project. Measures will also be taken to illuminate the building to make it a tourist attraction.
This is the tribute Bengal government wishes to pay to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Gandhiji along with setting up of Gandhi University at Tamluk.
