The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has set up a free government health centre near the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in New Town. The health centre is situated on the first floor of the Utility Building of Action Area 1D. Debashis Sen, Chairman of New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) said,
Residents of New Town have had a long-standing demand to be integrated into the state’s health network and we have finally managed it with this centre”.
The West Bengal State Health Department has provided with the equipments, medicines and manpower while the NKDA has developed the infrastructure for the health centre. The health centre has a space of around 4,000sq ft and has an outdoor patient department (OPD), a dispensary, a pathology lab for conducting blood tests, an immunisation room, an observation and dressing room along with a registration office and rest rooms for doctors. For now, one physician and two nurses will serve patients from 9am to 2pm Monday to Friday. However, no emergency cases will be attended in this health centre. Debashis Sen also said,
We have to send the health department reports on matters such as dengue and vector-borne diseases in New Town and now such information can be collated at this centre. Besides residents, this centre can be of use to village folk who live nearby as well as auto drivers, security guards etc. working here. We shall put up signboards on the roads to direct people here.
