Soon after the results of the 2024 Lok Sabha election were declared, a message with a link surfaced on WhatsApp groups. The message was shared with a link, "westbengalfreerecharge.blogspot.com," and stated that, as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has won the election, all West Bengal mobile users are eligible for a free 28-day recharge worth 239 rupees. This offer will be available until October 29.
However, Kolkata Police's investigation revealed that the entire message is a fraud meant to con people. The message's use of the Chief Minister's name is a trick to get readers to click on the link and fall victim to cyber fraud.
Anyone who clicks on the link risks falling victim to scams and possibly losing money. This reminds people to be cautious when interacting with doubtful messages or links and to be aware of the risks linked to internet scams.
The police in Kolkata have released a warning, requesting people to act with caution and avoid clicking on any such links. They have also stated that anyone found guilty of spreading false information and trying to con the public will face legal consequences.
This fake message has been reported in several districts all over the state, besides Kolkata. These kinds of messages have also been received by people in places like Bardhaman Block 1 and Nadia's Karimpur, showing how prevalent this scam is.
Although many people might not have taken the alert seriously, the public should exercise greater caution after the warning by the Kolkata Police.
