The Forest Department of West Bengal has recently decided to release two rhinoceros at Patlakhawa in North Bengal in the second week of December. The Forest Department has developed a new habitat for these one-horned rhinos, the development works of this 4 square metre area is currently in its last phase. Following the completion of works for the new habitat, the date for the official relocation of the rhinos will be finalized. The forest department has developed this new home for the rhinos in order to balance the rhino population that has increased at Jaldapara and Gorumara National Park in North Bengal. Ravi Kant Sinha, state Chief Wildlife Warden said, "The biggest challenge was procurement of drugs that are used for tranquilising the animals during their relocation.
The drugs needed to be imported from South Africa and the entire process is complicated and time consuming. We have been able to sort out everything". He added, "We have plans to shift six rhinos in phases at Patlakhawa from both Gorumara and Jaldapara". The Patlakhawa forest situated in North Bengal houses a large wetland and rhinos used to exist here earlier till river Torsa changed its course and the area was cut off. Tourism in this area is expected to receive a significant boost after Patlakhawa becomes a rhino habitat.
