To protect the produce, fish-farmer from Nadia covered ponds with fishing-nets which costs bird’s life instead. Shantipur science club lodgedan FIR against the farmer, Kartick Paul. Joint secretary of the club SubrataBiswas said, “this is sheer cruelty. It is natural for some birds to hunt for fish. But birds cannot be punished this way.”
All the fish-eating species get trapped frequently and many die after getting tangled into the nets. Ecologists, nature-care activists, and bird lovers often describe the traps as “inhuman” and consider it as a threat to the ‘ecological balance’.
Biswas also mentioned that he and other members of the club found everyday over a dozen birds get trapped in Paul’s net and those birds eventually die. Though some birds escape with wounded wings or legs, still to protect all the bird, nets have to be removed. They tried to prevail Paul to remove the nets but he refused the urge.
“I was forced to cover a portion of a canal with the nets as birds often steal my fish,” said Kartick Paul. “if a bird stuck in the nets we free it and let it go. But some birds have died. The police have asked us to remove the nets. We are considering the directive.” Added the accused.
