Felu Modak: Ultimate Destination of Fondness in Rishra

The fact that Bengalis go weak in the knees when it comes to sweets is not unknown to people. K.C. Das, Bhim Nag, Mouchak are few prominent names known to every Bengali. Felu Modak is one such celebrated sweet shop in Bengal. Though it is not situated in Kolkata, but it has earned a name for itself in the popular list of sweet shops.

It was established about 160 years ago by Felu Charan De in the southern part of Rishra. The business has been carried on by five generations and presently they are located at G.T. Road and N.C. Prakash lane. Currently Amitava De is the owner of the renowned shop and it has reached every corner of the southern Bengal as a brand. They offer  a wide range of sweets along with weekly specials like ‘gulab sandesh’, ‘abar khabo’, ‘khirer chap’, ‘laddu’, and ‘kaju barfi’ among others.

During the 2010 football world cup, the shop sold sweets made in the shape of the Brazilian and Argentinean flags and the staff wore jerseys of both the countries. This act perfectly defines the craze and madness of the Bengalis for both football and sweets.  Their Cadbury-Mishti created a revolution by replacing traditional Bengali sweets as bhog to the idol of the century old Radhaballabh temple in Serampore. The new Cadbury-Mishti was an instant hit among the devotees and was happily accepted by all. From Dadagiri to Radhaballabh temple, Felu Modak has earned a reasonable fame for itself and has emerged as one of the go-to places if you want a slice Bengal outside the city lights.
