EPFO steps towards transparency

The Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has taken another step towards providing transparency.

Sources said that in case an employee wants to withdraw his money from the provident fund account, he will have to be given a full account of what his account balance is and how the figure has been arrived at.

The employee will be given a ‘worksheet’ or ‘calculation sheet’ in which all the minute details would be given about his provident fund account.

All the regional offices of the EPFO have been given instructions to work towards its implementation.

Officials also said that if possible the PF accounts details would be made available on smartphones or through email. These decisions have been made owing to the number of queries of employees regarding their PF accounts. Looking at the complaints that are filed by employees the department has decided to provide the services both online and offline and in both cases officials of the respective regional offices will have to provide with the details of a person's provident fund account.

The EPFO has given a similar instruction regarding the provision of pensions in provident fund accounts of employees. The present practice is to set an amount of money from the employees provident fund account for their pension. After retirement the employee is provided pension from that account.

What would be the amount of pension for an employee is determined by a specific formula of the department. Very often question arises whether the employee was entitled to more or less of the specific amount. Owing to this discrepancy the EPFO has decided to present a transparent account to the employee from where he will get to know the exact amount of pension due to him or her.

Officials said that since the entire process is done online now, it could be provided to employees without the hassle of visiting regional offices and putting in request in writing. The new method is leads to less paper works and the time required for employees to get their money. That in turn has led to lower corrupt practices among officials.
