You don't have to believe in Ghosts in order to enjoy a horror story, movie or an article on ghosts. While a ghost related article might not turn you into a believer of the supernatural; it surely will make you ponder upon the mysteries of human existence or non-existence thereof while raising the possibilities of another layer of life outside the materialistic world.
Ghost, spirits, and paranormal activities are something which some like to believe, and some don't. But one thing is guaranteed - none can ignore the term “Bhoot”. “Okhane jash na Bhoot ache”, “Misti Kheyechish? Jol kheye ja, nahole bhoot a dhorbe” and the list goes on... Back in our childhood, we all have heard spooky stories from our grandparents, parents and also the interesting wanderlust uncle living next-door, be it on a lonely afternoon or on a charcoal dark night, which scared the hell out of us.
Kolkata is known for its rich culture the world over but if you look deep inside the palatial buildings, bridges and administrative buildings constructed during the British Raj, you will find these places filled with spooky stories. Besides that, Kolkata has a charm of the old which is seemingly preferred by the ghosts! The spooky stories mentioned here have spread like forest-fire though we have no idea about the source of the stories!
So, lock the doors, close all the windows, lie down, tuck in and read on...after reading this article even the ghost might say “Aajo rojoni te hoyni shomoy”.

1. National Library, Alipore

2. Calcutta High Court
This oldie here is the oldest court in India and it does have its share of spooky stories. No one dares to stay in the premises after sunset. It is to be believed that the court is haunted by the spirit of an offender, who was hanged in the court premises.
3. Writer's Building
When we say no one wants to work here after the sun goes down, we are serious about it. We mean no earthly soul dares to dwell here after sunset. You ask why? The 300 years old building holds secret within its walls. This was the place where famous revolutionaries Binay, Badal and Dinesh killed Captain Simpson of the East India Company. The largest room in the North-East side corner of the Building is believed to be haunted.
4. Putul Bari (House of Dolls)
Imagine an old house full of cobwebs and dolls on the 3rd floor! There are some inhabitants in the house till now, but no one dares to visit the upper floors of the house. Located near Shyambazar jetty, Putul Bari will make you feel uneasy. The stories goes like, wealthy owners use to sexually exploit and kill the nautch-girls. The spirits of such girls are believed to be still caged in this house.
5. Nimtaala Shamshaan Ghat
Recognized as one of the oldest burning ghats in Kolkata and considered to be the “adda” place for all the spirits.
6. South Park Street cemetery
For some of you this place is perfect for a candid picture but it is not a good idea to loiter around alone. Several paranormal activities like cameras dysfunction, shadows moving or capturing eerie images have been witnessed in this place and no one can explain why...
7. The Royal Calcutta Turf Club
Who doesn't like bidding on a horse and watch it winning the game, leaving everyone behind like dust. But, not on a Saturday moonlight night, where you might get a glimpse of “Shaheb er Shada Ghora” galloping over the stands. The story goes, race maniac George William left his job, family for his love of racing and his “Pride”. She won every race, whenever she used to participate. The day she lost her race, George William lost his fortune and the next morning she took her last breath.
8. Rabindra Sarovar Metro Station
We travel in metro every single day, it is the best commute one can opt for. However, suicide in metro is common these days, but it is weird that 80% of the suicides occur in Rabindra Sarovar Metro. This metro station is famously known as “Paradise of Suicide”.
9. Hastings House
This one is not for the faint of heart. It is believed that one still can hear the footsteps of Warren Hastings on the corridors of Hastings House. Presently it’s the woman's college under Calcutta University. Students claim that they have seen a man riding a horse visiting this place many a time.
10. Under the Howrah Bridge
Ganges is considered to be the life-giver and life-taker as well. News of people jumping in the Ganges from Howrah Bridge and drowning is quite common. Wrestlers who practice on the banks of this river have seen hands waving at them during night time.
