The much anticipated East-West Metro could begin its operation with the 6Km stretch between Sector V and Salt Lake Stadium opening as early as April-end. However, this would depend on the timely approval of the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), an independent organization under the ministry of civil aviation. And the entire 16.6 km stretch between Salt Lake Sector V and Howrah Maidan, which includes an underwater stretch of the Hooghly, is likely to start operation by 2021.
The light rail system will be undergoing rigorous testing and commissioning process, before welcoming passengers on board, and this would also ensure that the Metro is fully functional and safe to carry passengers before services commence. A comprehensive test would be organized by the CRS, before giving approval. This would involve checking the tracks, stations, synchronization of passenger safety gates, electric traction signaling and telecom systems, fire safety, station lifts and so on, and also whether the staffers are trained to handle the operations. The East-West Metro achieved safety certification from the Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO), the nodal agency nominated by the ministry of railways for conducting oscillation trials on January 21.
