On 24th September, East Bengal Football Club extended their winning record by winning their 8th consecutive Calcutta Football League (“CFL”) title by holding rivals to a 2-2 draw in a thrilling derby at the Kanchenjunga Stadium.
East Bengal won all the CFL titles since 2010. East Bengal has a record haul of 39 titles now.
East Bengal needed a draw to win the title with both teams being on the same number of points (22) but East Bengal won the league due to superior goal difference.
Tempers flared as the derby neared its final moments. First Mohun Bagan skipper Kingshuk Debnath was sent off for a second booking as angry players surrounded the referee in protest.
Minutes later, substitute Surabuddin Mullick was shown the second yellow and given marching orders for a challenge on Chesterpaul Lyngdoh.
