Durga Puja To Get Unesco World Heritage Tag?

Durga Puja might soon get a world heritage status from Unesco. A dossier has been prepared by the state government to pitch for the status and will introduce it to Unesco officials as they visit the city for two days. Apart from this, the state government will also pitch for the world heritage tag for Bishnupur in Bankurathe cradle of Bengals terracotta temples.

A Unesco team will be inspecting across the country and all of South Asian countries, seeking preliminary applications from representatives about tangible and intangible heritage of their respective states. The state representatives would be informed about how to pitch the applications properly, because inappropriate applications in the past have weakened their cases. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself had taken a lot of interest in pitching for an intangible heritage status for Durga Puja. As a part of the official representation, the West Bengal Heritage Commission will be present to meet the Unesco officials. A demand for Dalhousie and some parts of North Kolkata for the world heritage tag would be made during the meeting.
