The 65th National Film Award that took place on Thursday gave rise to a controversy which should be paid attention to. 60 Awardees refused to attend the prestigious and honourable National Film Award ceremony where the President of the country himself gives away the awards.
The President this year gave away only 11 awards, which was the main reason that the awardees did not attend the event. Award winners like, singer KJ Yesudas, filmmakers Prasad Oak and Nagraj Manjule are some of the people who refused to attend the event since all the awards would not be given by the President.
This year the custom was broken and it was decided that the President would give away 11 awards and Smriti Irani who is the Minister of Information & Broadcasting would give the rest, and this disappointed the awardees. They wrote an open letter stating their disappointment.
Indrani Chakroborty who directed Ladakh chale Rickchawala got the Best Adventure Film award and said “Getting the National Award from the President of India is a huge honour. Any recipient treasures that one photograph with the President for life. We have given a signed petition to the directorate of film festivals stating that we will be absent from the ceremony if the awards aren't given by the President,”
Since the awardees had skipped the event, the organizers decided to fill the vacant seats with dummies. They shifted the nameplates of the awardees from the second row to the first row and filled two back rows with dummies.
