The Calcutta University recently held a meeting with college heads and officials regarding the issue of attendance of students for the new CBCS system. The CBCS (choice-based credit system) system has made it mandatory for the students to have at least 60 percent attendance to be able to appear for the semester exams. The attendance also carries a separate 10 marks which is awarded to the students having 90 or up a percentage of attendance. Students with 60 to 74 percent of attendance will be awarded 6 marks out of 10, whereas 8 will be awarded for 75 to 89 percent. The Calcutta University administration during the meeting held on the Rajabazar science college campus reminded the heads of colleges of this new rule and asked them to warn students in case they are falling short of attendance. The colleges urged the university administration to come up with a uniform rule for lack of attendance to which Dipak Kar, university pro-vice-chancellor said, “Colleges will have to find their own methods to ensure every student has the mandatory minimum 60 percent attendance. The university can’t interfere in this matter. The onus is on the college administration”. The university, however, suggested the colleges to set up a biometric system to monitor students’ attendance and instructed the college officials to alert students fortnightly or once a month in case their attendance is low.
