It was another brilliant year with Ronaldo, as he won his fifth Ballon d’Or.
During the award presentation ceremony, all of a sudden Cristiano Ronaldo appeared walking onto the stage beneath the Eiffel Tower, clutching a golden ball under his arm. At a glitzy ceremony befitting Ronaldo, he won his fifth Ballon d’Or award, beating Lionel Messi to the prize and matching his rival’s record haul.
Ronaldo was voted the best player in the planet once again, edging out Lionel Messi and Neymar. Ronaldo won the Ballon d’Or in 2008 before winning in 2013, 2014 and 2016.
Fresh off the back of winning Euro 2016 with Portugal, Ronaldo followed that up with 42 goals in 46 games as Real Madrid won La Liga, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup - the first time the side had won four trophies in a season.
“I’ve waited a long time for this. This has been a stupendous year for me, we won the Champions League and La Liga and on a personal level I was top scorer in the Champions League.
“Trophies help me win prizes like this and I have to thank my team mates at Madrid and Portugal. They’ve been very important to me.” Ronaldo said standing with his mother Maria Dolores and his son Cristiano Jr.
“Another dream come true. Unbelievable feeling. Thanks to my family, friends, teammates, coaches and everyone that stood by my side throughout the years,” said Ronaldo on Twiiter afterwards.
This was another trophy-laden year for Ronaldo, having spearheaded Madrid’s run to the La Liga title with 25 league goals and he also claimed the fourth Champions League winners’ medal of his career – a tournament in which he displayed his ruthless goalscoring at its best. Ronaldo almost single handedly helped Real Madrid win the Champions League trophy with his goals. There were five goals he scored against Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neur across two legs in the quarter-finals, including a hat-trick at the Bernebeu, he then struck another hat-trick to knockout Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals and scored twice in the final as Real saw off Juventus 4-1 in Cardiff.
Between them, Ronaldo and Messi, have not let anyone else win this coveted award for a decade now. This is their era: they have won seven of the past 10 European Cups between them, and been the competition’s top scorer for each and every one of those seasons, and the Ballon d’Or reflects that.
In celebration of Ronaldo’s latest achievement, Nike presented him with the special Mercurial Superfly CR7 Quinto Triunfo boots.
The predominantly gold boots feature CR7 on the heel counter and include the years of his awards from 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017.
Ronaldo will wear the boots on the pitch with 1000 pairs available later this month.
