Zac O’ Yeah, creator of Hari Majestic, an everyman crime-solver who operates from the shady streets of Bengaluru’s Majestic area has funnily stated once" thriller is scintillating". We need more real prose which will make us squirm and take action instead of clucking at casual talk around topics related to psychology and crime, as we sit in our comfortable drawing rooms or coffee shops. It is only this discomfort that can be channeled if more mystical genre get outburst.
Over the years Indian cupboards have been brimming up with mythological and romance spree. It is undeniable that there had been a right space for feluda and Byomkesh Bokshi as the crime saviour. But these crimes did not feature the best sellers list apart from a new change for the last couple of years. Writers like Ravi Subramanian, Puja Changoiwala, Mukul Deva, Sudhanshu Bisen and Novoneel chakraborty have been more naughty than nice since previous year follow ups. What changed though? Well, the answer shredded right below.
"Nobody wants to read about a good boy and girl. Somewhere deep inside all of us are a survival instinct that comes to fore when reading crime thrillers", stated Subramanian in his book "In the name of God". He is writing in the genre of crime because as much as it is omnipresent in modern life, it is only grudgingly acknowledged in the literature of the land. All these above mentioned mystery makers are the symbol of the coming-of-age of Indian crime fiction in English which is finally beginning to break free of colonial trappings and finding inspiration in “desi” elements.
However, Novoneel chakraborty author of ’’Forever is a lie" and "Forever is true" however has a different perspective. He feels that it is an inherit drama in the crime that attract his readers. He has turned his genre into psycho- sexual genre which has made the readers incline to his work. "My books are not limited to crime alone, what excites me and my readers are how a character adopts in a situation, which is dark and sensual at times”, stated the "Stranger Trilogy" Author.
The shelf rack shows and conclude that reading public is devouring the genre and digging it for more. Be it "Murder in a minute", "a thousand times over" or even "The forever series". Mystery makers are rolling their sleeves and changing the game.
